Welcome to the Equinox, the beginning
of spring and in some ways, the true
start of a new year! The Sun has moved into Aries, the days are
now officially longer than the nights, and the Sun is in trine aspect to Mars
as I write these words. The Sun and the
sign Leo, which it is said to “rule”, symbolizes the creative force in all of
us, while Mars and the sign Aries, which it is said to rule, symbolizes action;
the raw, powerful, instinctive action used to fuel the fires of creation. Both the Sun and Mars (as well as the signs
Aries and Leo) belong to the realm of fire which is the element of inspired,
consuming, transformation.
We therefore
see that this time calls for ACTION, and there are a few considerations worth
remembering as we launch ourselves forward into this new year of
experience.The first is simply that
Mars has been in the sign of Leo for an extended period of time since last
October and that it has been retrograde (apparent motion backward through the
zodiac) since just before Christmas, turning direct just recently. We have therefore, collectively, been in a
time period of RE-view, RE-new, and RE-do: reviewing, renewing, and redoing our
lives, our creations, and ourselves.I want to emphasize that this time period
is now officially over.....
Just as human consciousness and therefore human nature, are evolving as we become more aware of ourselves and creation, so to is the nature of our sciences and arts, including astrology.Let’s face it, the art/science of astrology is as old and perhaps older than the study of mathematics itself, as it deals with observing natural phenomena (in this case celestial) and relating it to life events independant of actual chart calculations. But it is the point and purpose driving this study that has changed and is changing with the development of our species.
Indigenous people throughout time have actively participated through ritual and ceremony with the natural rhythms and cycles of nature. The purpose behind this participation is quite simply that the spirits like to be acknowledged and appreciated by humankind! As a closer bond between incarnated souls and spiritual deities is strengthened, the two realities further support and contribute to the unfolding of one another. Shamanic Astrology seeks to connect the individual to the rhythms, or dance of the night sky, through observation, ceremony, and “deep listening”. Watching and “listening” to the journey of Venus (and her lover Mars) as she travels through the eastern morning sky, descends, and rises in the west, is one means through which we can make a “cosmic connection” to the eternal feminine force of nature.
All manifest creation, all life as we know it, can be viewed as the Creator or Source realizing Itself. The Source, or “All That Is”, at some point polarized Itself from total Unity into diversity to experience Itself; hence creation. With this polarization all three dimensional duality came into existence. The root, or basis of duality, then, is the Creator/creation, the Void/manifested life, Spirit/matter, Love/fear – the former existing eternally and the latter temporally.
